Everything You Need to Know About Hilton Lifetime Elite Status

There is only one Hilton lifetime elite tier (Diamond) so let’s spend some time walking through how to earn it and why you might want to get it.

What is Hilton elite status?

If you need a primer on what Hilton elite status is and how to earn it, see our post outlining the value of the status.

How can you earn Hilton lifetime elite status?

Hilton’s lifetime elite status is earned by a combination of years of elite status and either nights stayed in their hotels or base points earned. Now, the good thing is that both paid and award nights count towards the total. But remember that you’ll have to book directly or through certain OTAs to have those nights count. Anything that counts for a regular elite night with the chain will also increment the lifetime counter.

What lifetime status can you earn with Hilton?

Currently, there is only one level of lifetime elite status you can earn with Hilton: Lifetime Diamond. You need 10 years of holding Hilton Diamond status, which don’t need to be consecutive. On top of that, you’ll need one of the following:

  • A whopping 1,000 nights in Hilton hotels since joining their program, or
  • Two million base points

Both of these restrictions are tough to satisfy.

The 1,000 required nights is significantly higher than what Marriott requires for their Lifetime Platinum status. If you were staying the minimum number of nights to hit Diamond status (60/year), it will take you nearly 17 years to reach the status. I think most will find the number of nights a more restrictive requirement than the years of Diamond.

Most Hilton hotels give 10 base points per dollar spent (except at Home 2Suites and Tru, where earning is 5 base points per dollar). That means the best-case scenario is you’re looking at $200,000 in pre-tax room rates, similar to Hyatt’s Lifetime Globalist.

Do you earn elite nights just for holding Hilton lifetime elite status?

No, when you have Hilton lifetime elite status, you are given the corresponding status on a complimentary basis. Only the status is provided to you and not the number of elite nights to earn that status. As an example, if you have Lifetime Diamond, at the start of the year, you will receive Diamond status but will not receive 60 elite nights in your account.

Do you earn any benefits for having Lifetime Diamond status?

No. While Hilton does have milestone bonus rewards for reaching certain thresholds, you don’t get any of those benefits just for having Lifetime Diamond status.

However, Lifetime Diamonds are coded in the system as different from regular Diamonds. That means hotel staff will see who has lifetime status and who does not. That doesn’t guarantee you’ll get special treatment as it’s up to the hotel if they want to differentiate, but it certainly won’t hurt your chances.

Do credit cards count towards Hilton lifetime elite status?

Yes and no. The Diamond status earned from the Hilton Aspire credit card will count towards your counter. However, no Hilton credit card will directly impact the number of nights or base points earned.

Are there any shortcuts to earning lifetime status?

While not a true shortcut, it’s worth pointing out that the Hilton Aspire credit card provides instant Diamond status. The annual fee is high ($550), but this is a more achievable form of “lifetime” status–or at least for the life of you holding the card.

But otherwise, no, there aren’t any known shortcuts to get around the number of nights or base points.

How to check progress in the app or website

You can’t. And that’s the most cryptic part of this process. If you want to check your progress, instead you’ll need to reach out to Hilton customer service and ask. Just send a message over to diamond@hilton.com and wait for a response.

Can Hilton take away your lifetime status once earned?

Yes and no. You did earn your Hilton lifetime elite status and you don’t need to worry about requalifying ever again.

But keep in mind that Hilton reserves the right to change its program. Mergers do happen and there’s no guarantee of honoring benefits in the process. And of course if you break the terms of the program, Hilton is well within its rights to take action against you, which can include closing your account. So just because you have lifetime status doesn’t give you freedom to no longer play by the rules.

Is there any extra benefit you get beyond lifetime status?

Marriott hands out luggage tags when you reach Lifetime Platinum in their program. Hilton also sends out a gift to members upon reaching Lifetime Diamond. Currently, the gift is Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II, which is arguably a nicer gift.

What happens next?

Enjoy your status!

Some people after earning Hilton lifetime elite status will turn their attention to other hotel chains, such as Hyatt or Marriott. If you have flexibility on where to stay and have already achieved Lifetime Diamond, that’s a reasonable goal.
