It can be confusing trying to understand the details behind Marriott lifetime elite status, but let’s walk through some of the details together.

How can you earn Marriott lifetime elite status?

Marriott’s lifetime elite status is earned based on two criteria:

• The number of nights stayed in their hotels, and
• The number of years having the corresponding status (or higher).

What lifetime status can you earn with Marriott?

Currently, there are only three levels of lifetime elite status you can earn with Marriott:

• Lifetime Silver status: 250 elite nights and 5 years of Silver status (or higher)
• Lifetime Gold status: 400 elite nights and 7 years of Gold status (or higher)
• Lifetime Platinum status: 600 elite nights and 10 years of Platinum status (or higher)

Very briefly, Marriott made available a Lifetime Titanium tier shortly after its merger with Starwood. The criteria for that status was 750 elite nights and 10 years of Platinum status (or higher). Unfortunately, there is no indication this lifetime status level will become available again. Those who were lucky enough to earn it when the window opened can continue to enjoy Titanium status indefinitely.

Do you earn elite nights just for holding Marriott lifetime elite status?

No, when you have Marriott lifetime elite status, you are given the corresponding status on a complimentary basis. Only the status is provided to you and not the number of elite nights to earn that status. As an example, if you have Lifetime Gold, at the start of the year, you will receive Gold Elite status but will not receive 25 elite nights in your account.

What about the 50-night choice benefit for Lifetime Platinum?

No, just as you don’t earn elite nights for holding lifetime status, you also don’t get the 50-night choice benefit. The 50- and 75-night choice benefits are only provided to those members who stay enough nights to earn them.

Do credit cards count towards Marriott lifetime elite status?

Yes, elite nights earned from having the right Marriott credit cards or spending on a specific card.

If you have a personal Marriott credit card, expect to earn the following number of elite nights. However, it’s important to know that you’ll only earn the elite night credit for one personal card if you have multiple.

• 5 nights from the Marriott Bonvoy Bold Card by Chase
• 15 nights from the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card by Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy Bevy Card by Chase, and the Ritz-Carlton Credit Card by Chase
• 25 nights from the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card by American Express

Additionally, having the Marriott Bonvoy Business Card by American Express will give an extra 15 elite nights. These nights stack with what you would earn with the personal card.

Lastly, each $5,000 spent in a year on the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless card will earn you 1 elite night.

Are there any shortcuts to earning lifetime status?

Aside from the credit card elite nights mentioned above, there are a couple of ways you can boost your lifetime elite night counts:

• If you’ve earned the 50- or 75-night choice benefits, you can select the 5 elite night credits. These will count towards your lifetime counter.
• Consider mattress running, where you find hotel nights cheap enough that it makes sense to stay purely for the elite night credit. Some hotels may also work with you if you don’t intend on staying the night.

Additionally, if you earn Marriott status from a credit card, it will count towards your total if you otherwise didn’t earn the status via elite nights. Cards that immediately earn Marriott elite status include:

• Silver status
  • Marriott Bonvoy Bold Card by Chase (earns Silver status)
  • Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card by Chase (earns Silver status)
• Gold status
  • Marriott Bonvoy Business Card by American Express
  • Marriott Bonvoy Bevy Card by American Express
  • The Ritz-Carlton Credit Card by Chase
  • American Express Platinum and Business Platinum
• Platinum status
  • Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant by American Express

How to check progress in the app or website

Checking your Marriott lifetime elite status progress is pretty simple. Just go to your Account tab and click on “Nights This Year” on the center of the page.

Then scroll down to the bottom where you’ll find the “See Lifetime Status Progress” link.

Here you’ll find the number of lifetime nights stayed at Marriott hotels at the top of the screen. Scroll down to the bottom to find all the details on the number of years of elite status at each threshold.

Can Marriott take away your lifetime status once earned?

Yes and no. You did earn your Marriott lifetime elite status and you don’t need to worry about requalifying ever again.

But keep in mind that Marriott reserves the right to change its program. Mergers do happen and there’s no guarantee of honoring benefits in the process. And of course if you break the terms of the program, Marriott is well within its rights to take action against you, which can include closing your account. So just because you have lifetime status doesn’t give you freedom to no longer play by the rules.

When will lifetime counters increment?

Lifetime nights will increase as the nights get posted to your account.

Lifetime years, on the other hand, are a bit complex. Marriott has a FAQ that tries to explain it, but it can be a bit confusing.

• If you reach a higher level of status, you will receive lifetime credit for that status the same year you obtain the status plus receive another lifetime credit the following year.
• If you reach the same level of status, you will receive lifetime credit the following year.
• Failing to reach the same level of status means your new status will be added by March of the following year.

Marriott claims the lifetime year counter will increment in January, but in my experience, it doesn’t typically update until sometime in February.

Unfortunately, if you have questions regarding the number of elite years in your account, Marriott agents are rather reticent to respond directly. The default answer seems to be that the number listed in the app is correct. Personally, I would suggest you hold off until April 1 before getting Marriott customer service involved to give the system a chance to update.

Is there any extra benefit you get beyond lifetime status?

Yes, for Lifetime Platinum! I’m glad you asked. Marriott has a special website dedicated towards celebrating your elite status if you have Lifetime Platinum (or Lifetime Titanium).

The site gives some interesting information like where you spent the most nights and how it compares to others. But the one thing that you’ll want to do is enroll to receive Marriott-branded luggage tags. There is a deadline for you to receive these tags. In my case, I earned Lifetime Platinum is July and needed to order the luggage tags by the following March.

I filled out the details in January, and one month later I received the package in the mail. The luggage tags seemed to be of good quality and have a tasteful design.

If you earned a lower lifetime tier with Marriott, it might be worth it to continue to work towards the higher tiers.

Some people after earning Marriott lifetime elite status will turn their attention to other hotel chains, such as Hilton or Hyatt. If you have flexibility on where to stay and have already achieved Lifetime Platinum, that’s a reasonable goal.
