There aren’t too many sweet spots bookable with Air India miles, but it does specialize in one thing: excellent award pricing on United.

For this post, I’m not going to get into the details of the elite status aspect of the program and instead focus on the redemption side of the program.

Updated April 7, 2026. Air India actually did a reverse devaluation of its points and made it more valuable for many redemptions! That’s impressive and nearly unheard of these days. Granted, this only impacts flights on Air India itself. They made their first class awards more expensive but we wouldn’t have considered those before anyways.

Only one bank program transfers to Air India miles

None of the major players transfer over to Air India miles, but there is one smaller player that does: Rove. (Mesa used to allow transfers until it went under late 2025.)

Points transfer fairly quickly at a 1:1 ratio, though it might require a few minutes to complete and logging out of and back into your account.

Award flights booked with Air India miles can be booked 355 days in advance

As a planner, I love being able to book awards well far in advance. I feel like I can lock down my preferred dates of travel before the majority of other award seekers. And so the earlier the schedule is released, the better it is.

But perhaps what matters more is being able to book awards before those with a large balance of miles with U.S. programs are able to book. Those programs generally open schedules and award bookings 11 months in advance. So if you can find a program that allows awards weeks before the comparable U.S. airline (here, United), you can generally book what you want.

Award flights booked with Air India miles can be booked 355 days in advance, giving plenty of time to redeem before United members can book those flights. That’s great! Getting something before others can access it is always helpful for a scarce resource like award space.

Award change and cancel fees aren’t good

Need to change or cancel an award flight? Air India Maharajan Club charges some tough penalties for any award changes and cancels. The fee will vary by region and how much time in advance of the flight the change/cancel is made.

• Canceling an Air India flight
  • Domestic India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Maldives, Myanmar, Sri Lanka:
    • 20% penalty for canceling at least 72 hours in advance
    • 30% penalty for canceling between 2 and 72 hours in advance
    • Only taxes refundable for canceling within 2 hours
  • APAC, Gulf, Africa:
    • 20% penalty for canceling at least 72 hours in advance
    • 30% penalty for canceling between 4 and 72 hours in advance
    • Only taxes refundable for canceling within 4 hours
  • Japan, Korea, Europe, North America:
    • 20% penalty for canceling at least 72 hours in advance
    • 30% penalty for canceling between 24 and 72 hours in advance
    • Only taxes refundable for canceling within 24 hours
• Canceling a Star Alliance flight
  • 20% penalty for canceling at least 7 days in advance
  • 30% penalty for canceling between 1 and 7 days in advance
  • Only taxes refundable for canceling within 1 day
• Changing an Air India flight
  • Domestic India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Maldives, Myanmar:

Flights on Air India

You’re going to want to load up the Air India Maharajan Club points calculator to figure out pricing. Pricing by route is inconsistent and we’re not able to conveniently bucket it into a true award chart. We can show this off by looking at three separate short routes: DEL-IXC (146 mi), DEL-JDH (296 mi), DEL-AMD (470 mi).

New pricing (starting April 2026)

• DEL-IXC costs between 3,000 and 5,000 points for economy, 14,000 points for business
• DEL-JDH costs between 4,500 and 8,500 points for economy, 14,000 points for business
• DEL-AMD costs between 3,500 and 6,000 points for economy, 17,000 points for business

Old pricing (prior to April 2026)

• DEL-IXC costs 5,000 points for economy, 18,000 points for business
• DEL-JDH costs 5,500 points for economy, 14,000 points for business
• DEL-AMD costs between 4,000 and 5,500 points for economy, 22,000 points for business

While it’s true that in general longer flights cost more, there isn’t a consistent rule to pricing. The same holds true at the upper end. While we haven’t investigated every single route, one route that can give a sense of the upper bound in pricing is the DEL-SFO route:

New pricing (starting April 2026)

• 40,000 to 75,000 points in economy
• 100,000 points in premium economy
• 130,000 points in business class
• 270,000 points in first class

Old pricing (prior to April 2026)

• 77,000 points in economy
• 124,000 points in premium economy
• 185,000 points in business class
• 235,000 points in first class

In other words, spending your Air India points and miles on Air India can be a bit expensive.

Flights on Star Alliance partners

This is where it can get really tough figuring out what pricing is because it’s not a consistent answer. Let’s run through a few examples to prove our point.

How about some short-distance flights? Let’s take a look at two, both in economy: LAX-SFO (334 mi) and SIN-KUL (184 mi).

• LAX-SFO prices out at 3,500 Air India miles in economy
• SIN-KUL prices out at 7,500 Air India miles in economy

Despite SIN-KUL being the shorter flight, the price is more than twice that of the LAX-SFO route.

Let’s look at some longer flights. How about three, again all in economy: ZRH-SIN (6,405 mi), LHR-BKK (5,958 mi), SFO-SIN (8,446 mi).

• ZRH-SIN prices out at 65,000 Air India miles in economy
• LHR-BKK prices out at 75,000 Air India miles in economy
• SFO-SIN prices out at 70,000 Air India miles in economy

Even though LHR-BKK is the shortest of the three flights, pricing is higher than the other two long-haul routes. So, while it’s true that longer flights in general cost more miles, it’s not an absolute that longer flights cost more.

The one constant is that business class costs double the economy price and first class costs triple the economy price.

What are the sweet spots?

Unfortunately, there’s only one sweet spot that we’re aware of with the Air India Maharajan Club.

Great pricing for short United flights

It certainly might seem strange that one of the best options to use your Air India miles is on United Airlines, but hear us out. In general, the following holds for flights within the United States:

Paying as little as 5,500 miles routes like SFO-DEN or ORD-EWR? Sign us up for that! Or LAX-ORD for 7,500 miles? That’s much better than what United charges. Domestic United business class isn’t aspirational or easy to find, but at only twice the cost of economy, it’s not too expensive.

Sadly, this award pricing doesn’t hold true for Air Canada flights. The Toronto YYZ – Montreal YUL route is only 316 mi in length but it’s 8,000 points for economy.

Infant awards are 10% of the cash price on some flights

Back when we flew internationally with an infant, we ended up sometimes paying a pretty penny to allow our child to sit in our lap. Without getting into the debate on the safety of the lap child, I can say it sometimes got expensive.

With most airlines, you would be forced to pay 10% of the cash price of the ticket. Say you found a flight for 75,000 miles in business class one-way. But if you want to bring your lap infant, you’d have to pay 10% of the cash fare, which could be thousands of dollars. A one-way flight is painfully priced high, and you might pay less if doing a roundtrip, but it’s still quite a dent. I’d say the rough average of what we paid for an infant was around $600 for the ticket.

Sadly, Air India Maharajan Club falls into the category of programs charging based on cash fares.

How to best search for availability?

The unfortunate thing is

• Pricing varies with route, making it tough to summarize costs and trends
• There aren’t other tools out there that summarize award availability, likely because of how complicated the program is

Thus, if you want to figure out availability, you’re going to have to use the Air India website. In theory, you can just price out your flights by logging in and then ensuring “Pay By Points” is selected to see all airports in the dropdowns.

Then, if you find success on the route and date you select, you’ll see results.

However, if you want to search flights over several dates, you’re going to have to start the search from scratch–there is no calendar view. And if there isn’t award availability, their site will just bomb out. That means what you should do is use another website to determine availability and then come back to check the price. It sounds rather cumbersome, but if all you care about is United short-haul flights, it might be tolerable.

We’d normally recommend a tool like Seats.Aero to find United award pricing, but it can be tough using that tool to find award pricing bookable by partners. So, pick a partner airline like Air Canada that has a website you like using.

Do Air India miles expire?

Yes, Air India miles will expire two years after earning them. Miles can be extended, but only if you credit a flight to Air India before they expire. Transferring more miles into your account is not enough to extend their validity.
