Thinking about making your experience to Southern California more enjoyable with Lightning Lane at Disneyland and California Adventure?

What is Lightning Lane?
Our elevator pitch on Lightning Lane is it’s a way for you to partially skip the regular line at both Disneyland and California Adventure theme parks. It’s an add-on, above and beyond the regular price of the ticket.
For this article, we’re only interested in the feature at the Southern California Disney parks. There are three versions of Lightning Lane:
- Lightning Lane Multi Pass: get space-eligible faster entry into eligible attractions and shows (once per attraction per day)
- Lightning Lane Single Pass: get faster entry at a single attraction at each park for a specified fee
- Lightning Lane Premier Pass: get guaranteed faster entry into both Southern California parks with no set arrival time, can be purchased 7 days before entry
You may have heard of Genie+, which was the naming convention prior to how they call it now. Lightning Lane is the Genie+ replacement.
What Lightning Lane is not
As important as it is to know what Lightning Lane covers, it’s equally important to set your expectations correctly on what it doesn’t include:
- It does not cover entry to the same ride more than once under normal circumstances (we’ll talk about exceptions later).
- You will not be able to immediately walk right onto the ride at most rides.
- Each person in your party should have their own pass; you can’t just get it for one person and bypass the line for your whole party.
- Not every attraction has the Lightning Lane feature and you’ll need to do some research before you purchase to make sure it covers the attractions you wish to ride.
- The Multi Pass doesn’t guarantee you’ll be able to ride; you must return to the ride within the specified window.
The price for Lightning Lane in 2026
What will this run you in 2026? You’re looking at the following price levels for Disney Lightning Lane in Southern California:
| Lightning Lane Type | Cost |
| Lightning Lane Multi Pass | Generally between $34 and $40 per person per day |
| Lightning Lane Single Pass | Generally between $23 and $29 per person per day |
| Lightning Lane Premier Pass | Generally between $339 and $449 per person per day |
Only a “limited” number of Premier Passes can be purchased on any given day. The easiest way to check if passes are available is by loading up the Disneyland App (Apple App Store or Google Play) and check if it’s available to purchase on the home screen.

By our count, there are 32 total rides in Disneyland and 17 in California Adventure. That translates to
- 41% of Disneyland rides accept Lightning Lane Multi Pass
- 47% of California Adventure rides accept Lightning Lane Multi Pass
We’re using the Multi Pass here as the example as it’s the most popular version of Lightning Lane guests purchase.
Is it worth it to buy Lightning Lane?
Honestly, we think there are two different answers to this question as it depends on which park you’re visiting.
Disneyland: Yes, we think of the price of the Lightning Lane Multi Pass as part of the ticket price
On average, we’d say Lightning Lane helps us get onto an extra 6 rides per day. If we choose to stay later, we’d probably find it gives us a few more. If it’s a particularly crowded day–where the times on the best rides are eaten up early–we might find it’s hard to get to 6. But for the sake of convenience, let’s call it 6.
That might not sound like much, but with crowds the size they are, your regular ticket generally gives you an embarrassingly small number of rides. How many might we go on if we don’t have Lightning Lane Multi Pass? On an average day, maybe 10 rides. Again, this doesn’t mean we’re here until the park closes and includes times when we eat. It’s also highly dependent on the size of the crowd that day.
Our way of looking at this suggests a $34 to $40 upcharge on the cost of your ticket to ride close to 40% more rides. We’d label that a good deal if you’re going to Disneyland anyways. And thus we would say just mentally add it to the cost of your ticket.
California Adventure: No, we don’t think Lightning Lane Multi Pass is worth it most days
If you think about it simplistically, you’d find that there’s a higher proportion of rides that accept Lightning Lane Multi Pass at California Adventure (47% vs 41% at Disneyland). That’s good, right?
Unfortunately, not in our books.
California Adventure has about half the number of rides than at Disneyland, and that’s the real metric to focus on. With so few rides, and everyone on Park Hopper tickets locked from visiting the other park until 11AM, you’ll find that those Lightning Lane timeslots are eaten up real quick. And once the timeslots start approaching 2 hours in the future from when you book it, the pass loses a lot of its effectiveness.
There’s only one way we believe the Multi Pass holds material benefit: you’re here for rope drop, skip the Radiator Springs Racers, and just do the heavy hitter Lightning Lane rides (Guardians of the Galaxy, WEB SLINGERS, Incredicoaster, and Soarin’). You’ll get the more crowded rides out of the way early, but that’s really how to do it here. If you’re not doing rope drop, there’s a fair chance you’ll be frustrated.
That said, this issue is mitigated somewhat if your ticket is a Park Hopper. Once Lightning Lane runs dry at California Adventure, you can hop over to Disneyland and continue the fun.
What about the Lightning Lane Single Pass?
Let’s put it this way: how much do you value going on one ride? From a cost perspective, it sure seems more economical to go with the Lightning Lane Multi Pass, which offers access to multiple rides. The Lightning Lane Single Pass only gives access to either Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance in Disneyland or Radiator Springs Racers in California Adventure. Even if you show up to rope drop, it can take half an hour to ride if you’re not right at the front of the crowd.
Radiator Springs Racers in particular typically sees 2 hour waits during the day while Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is closer to 1 hour waits. Dollar-wise, Radiator Springs might sound like the better choice, but it’s still a lot to pay for just one ride and so we wouldn’t recommend it for most. This is only for those who don’t have the patience or the time to wait in a line, do not want to rope drop, and don’t mind overpaying to bypass.
Is the Lighting Lane Premier Pass worth it?
If only we had enough money such that a $400 per person charge would feel like chump change! At around 10 times the price of the Lightning Lane Multi Pass, we’d say it’s not worth it.
That said, the more crowded the park, the more it’s worth but the more they tend to charge. If you only had one day at Disneyland and absolutely needed to ride every single ride at the park, this gets as close to a guarantee as you can get. But, remember, it won’t skip the line for you at non-Lightning Lane rides like everything in Fantasyland. Thus, you’ll have to do the math to make sure the rides you want to ride accept Lightning Lane.
It’s also only good for one entry per ride, which is a bit of a bummer for the price you’re paying.
How to use Lightning Lane on the Disneyland App
Thankfully, it’s fairly straightforward to use Lighting Lane on the Disneyland app. The app tells you which ride you have selected, when to return, and importantly when you can choose a new ride. Once you’ve scanned your ticket and entered the park, open up the Disneyland App and press the (+) symbol at the bottom (outlined in a red box below).

From there, several options will pop up. Press on the option that says “Book Lightning Lane entry” (highlighted in the red box).

You can then see the “Tip Board”. Right under the title, you can select your theme park and when you’re able to book your next entry if you have the Lightning Lane Multi Pass. If you’re only interested in booking Lightning Lane experiences, make sure the option widget is turned on for that selection.

And then just choose the ride you want. From there, you can select which guests want the pass and then confirm your selection. When you’re done, you’ll see the confirmation screen.

How do you use the Lightning Lane reservation once you make it? You have two ways:
- Scan your (park entry) ticket barcode, which will register that you have a Lightning Lane reservation attached.
- Scan the specific Lightning Lane reservation bar code, hidden in the app.
If you want to scan your ride-specific bar code (or you perhaps just forget what you reserved), go back to the Tip Board, but this time, click the “My Day” option at the top. From there, you can see what you’ve already selected, when to return, and the redeem button that will bring up the ride-specific barcode.

Maximizing the Lightning Lane Multi Pass
Let’s say you want to maximize your Lightning Lane Multi Pass. How would you go about doing that? First, let’s talk about a few rules that govern the pass:
- You cannot make your first Lightning Lane selection until after you’ve entered the park.
- Even if you have a Park Hopper ticket, you cannot make a reservation for a ride at the other park until after the entry time is beyond the Park Hopper entry time.
- You can make a new selection as soon as you scan your existing Lightning Lane entry at the machine readers, not when you’ve completed the ride. This means you can make a new choice as soon as you get into the line past the Lightning Lane scanners.
- The maximum amount of cooldown between uses is 2 hours. That means if your reservation is for more than 2 hours out, you only have to wait 2 hours before you can make your next choice.
- You will always get the first available timeslot for your party size. The time might change during the reservation process depending on your party size.
- You can swap the ride you’ve selected in the app if you wish. Generally this is if you’re fishing for a specific timeslot or you don’t think you can make the return time.
- The Lightning Lane Multi Pass only permits one completed reservation per ride per day.
- If a ride is closed at any time during your return window, your Lightning Lane reservation will convert to a pass that can be used at any eligible Lightning Lane attraction that same day.
When a ride breaks down
Let’s take a moment to explain that last one. If your ride breaks down sometime during your return window, you’ll see “Lightning Lane – Select Experiences”.

This pass can be used at any ride that accepts the Multi Pass reservation. This pass is far more useful to you.
- You can use it on any ride, not just the one you chose.
- It can be used at rides you’ve already been on and effectively bypasses the one-time only nature of the pass.
- You can use it on rides that do not have any more timeslots available that same day.
- The one-time limitation applies for the ride you originally attempted to ride.
What does this mean? After you’re done getting the rides you want, you might want to book rides you have no interest in riding in the hopes for fishing for one of these passes. In our experience, some rides break down more often than others (hello, Matterhorn). If you’re fishing for these elusive passes, wait until it gets close to the end of the return window and change it to a new one. Sometimes rides just don’t break down, so this isn’t a guarantee by any stretch of the imagination. But you paid for the pass, you might as well get the most out of it.
You could also base this off what’s currently temporarily closed on the app, especially if the timeslot is coming up soon.
Is this an ethical use of the Lightning Lane Multi Pass? Typically the rides that still have timeslots later in the day are just not as popular (Autopia, “it’s a small world”, Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run). You taking up a slot to fish for a better pass isn’t going to materially impact others looking for one. It’s not like you’re doing this at the popular rides.
Is there a preferred order to the rides with the Multi Pass?
In truth, there is no wrong order to making your selections. This should all be based on what you want to ride. If influencers say you “must” book something first, that’s just their opinion. Don’t get wrapped up in the hype for the sake of the hype.
That said, some rides book up much quicker than others:
- Disneyland
- Indiana Jones Adventure
- Matterhorn Bobsleds
- Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway
- Space Mountain
- California Adventure
- Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!
- Soarin’ Over California
- Toy Story Midway Mania!
- WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure
Once those rides go, others tend to follow. If you want to ride these popular rides, you’ll want to get into the park as early as possible (ideally for rope drop). Then, consider the following order:
- Disneyland:
- Get a Lightning Lane entry for Space Mountain while waiting in line for Matterhorn. Use the Space Mountain entry afterwards.
- Then, get a Lightning Lane reservation for Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway while you go on the GADGETcoaster or Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin. Use the Runaway Railway entry afterwards.
- Then, get a Lightning Lane entry for Indiana Jones Adventure and go on the Haunted Mansion or Pirates of the Caribbean. Use the Indiana Jones Adventure entry afterwards.
- Things will slow down at this point, but that’s fine because you already hit the major rides.
- California Adventure:
- Get a Lightning Lane entry for Guardians of the Galaxy while you go on WEB SLINGERS. Use the Guardians of the Galaxy entry afterwards.
- Then, get a Lightning Lane entry for Toy Story: Midway Mania! while you go on Incredicoaster or Pixar Pal-A-Round. Use the Toy Story entry afterwards.
- Then, get a Lightning Lane entry for Soarin’ Over California while you go on Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue. Use the Soarin’ entry afterwards.
- Things will slow down at this point, but that’s fine because you already hit the major rides.

Officially, only one time per ride per day is allowed. That said, if your ride is not operational during your return window with a Multi Pass, you can get a “Select Experiences” ticket that can be used at any ride that accepts the Multi Pass, even those you’ve already experienced.

Yes, but only if your ticket includes the Park Hopper feature. You do not need to purchase separate Lightning Lane access for different Disney parks.

There may be other timeslots that open over time (generally later timeslots but sometimes earlier ones become available). You may change rides and timeslots within the app by exchanging your selection with a new one.
