Is Disney’s California Adventure Worth Visiting in 2026? Review and Tips

A smaller theme park, Disney’s California Adventure is worth a visit but it’s easy to see everything you want to see in less than a day.

Is Disney’s California Adventure still worth it in 2026?

Yes and no. California Adventure is a smaller theme park and one that comes with just as many crowds as neighboring Disneyland. Come here early enough and you could potentially ride everything by early afternoon. Having a park hopper ticket is arguably necessary so you can continue to enjoy the day at Disneyland. But the good news is that the park has more of an emphasis on food (and alcohol, if that matters to you). While you might leave for Disneyland for the rides, you should come back here for meals.

What’s great at Disney’s California Adventure

Let’s go through some of the better things awaiting you at California Adventure:

  • Arguably some of the best food in Disney parks within the United States. We’d put the food on at least the same level as what you would find at Epcot. Which one you find better is going to depend on your own preferences.
  • Rides that are geared for a slightly older audience than Disneyland. There are some bigger thrills here like the Incredicoaster, Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: BREAKOUT!, and Goofy’s Sky School. That’s not to say younger kids wouldn’t enjoy this park, but it’s fun to have more choices for an older audience.
  • Plenty of alcohol. While Disneyland is practically a dry theme park, it’s free-flowing over here across the way. If that matters to you and you don’t mind paying the high prices for alcohol, you might enjoy this Disney park more.

What feels lacking at Disney’s California Adventure

With the positives in mind, where exactly does California Adventure fall short?

  • A lack of rides in the Disney theme park. By our count. Disneyland right next door has almost double the number of rides as California Adventure has. If you don’t care for Radiator Springs, you might even get done with practically all rides by lunch even without Lightning Lane.
  • Speaking of Lightning Lane, it doesn’t feel like it adds the same impact at California Adventure. This has to do with the smaller number of rides and the higher proportion of rides that accept it. It seems like the timeslots fly by quicker here compared to Disneyland; come when it opens up for the park hopper feature and it’ll feel lackluster.
  • The theming of the park feels a bit missing. This is supposed to be a California Adventure, but there’s not much at this point that feels truly Californian. You have a couple of restaurants that feed on the theme, the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail, and Soarin’ Over California (when it’s not other variations). Yes, Cars takes place along Route 66, which extends into California, but more of the scenes are from Arizona and Texas.
  • The crowding is high for a park with so few rides. We don’t have a scientific study but based on our own impressions, when you do wait in a line in this park, it feels longer than the average wait in Disneyland. In reality, the park in total supports fewer people, but you won’t notice it when you’re stuck in a long line.

Disneyland vs. California Adventure (which is better?)

Disneyland and California Adventure: two theme parks with entrances that face each other. Which one should you choose?

The decision boils down to what you want from your day. The quick comparison table below helps you decide:

FeatureDisneylandCalifornia Adventure
Rides intended forGenerally younger guestsGenerally older guests
Number of rides32 by our count17, if you count the PhilarMagic movie
DiningGood, but we wouldn’t say it’s greatGreat options at multiple price ranges
Lightning Lane add-onGreat, as there are many rides to choose fromLacking, slots fill up quickly due to small number of rides in park
AlcoholOnly at set locations, can’t bring around the parkPractically everywhere
Has that “Disney feel”Yes, with plenty of nostalgiaSome, but feels more like a generic theme park

If you wanted the best of both worlds, you could elect for a park hopper ticket to allow you to, say, dine in California Adventure but spend most of your time in Disneyland. If the food matters that much for you, it’s a consideration, but we personally prefer not to waste time entering and exiting parks in the middle of the day.

Our ride counts might differ from what you find at other sites. We’re only counting rides, not shows or character greetings or displays.

Tips for Disney’s California Adventure with kids

  • While it’s not as effective at this park, we would still consider getting the Lightning Lane Multi Pass if coming here right from the start of the day. If you’re coming in with a park hopper ticket visiting Disneyland first, we’d say Lightning Lane Multi Pass is a bit of a waste.
  • At rope drop, you have two choices: visit Radiator Springs (which still might take 30-60 minutes in line) or ignore Radiator Springs. If you ignore it, you’ll find fairly short waits on the big rides.
  • The rides for a younger crowd that tend to get long waits are Monsters Inc, Toy Story Midway Mania, and WEB SLINGERS. If your little one doesn’t care for the thrill rides, start with these.
  • Sit down and enjoy the dining. This is one of the better parts of this theme park after all. You’ll do yourself a disservice if you only stick to fast food options like the turkey leg.
  • And if you have a child still breastfeeding, the Baby Care Center is in San Fransokyo Square, across from Boudin and next to Ghirardelli. You’ll get a more private place to feed and it’s air conditioned (great for the summer).

Best time to visit California Adventure

Thankfully, the weather in Southern California is the envy of practically the rest of the country. Summer can be hot, but winter isn’t too wet or cold. If you want to visit California Adventure when there are fewer crowds, consider coming before or after Spring Break (February or late April/May) or November (outside of Thanksgiving).

Additionally, we would advise against coming on Saturdays if you can avoid it. There are many local guests who love to spend the weekend here. Sunday mornings, however, can be relatively pleasant as others might be at church.

Not all holidays cause the park to get packed. The more obscure it is (like President’s Day), the less likely people have it off, and the easier time you’ll have.

How much time you need at Disney’s California Adventure?

Unlike Disneyland, which we felt needs at least two days to do it justice, we think Disney’s California Adventure could be experienced in full in a single day. If you hit up Radiator Springs to start, you can casually ride the rest of the rides throughout the day. If you don’t do Radiator Springs, our recommendation would be to get a park hopper ticket so you have more to do in the afternoon by going to Disneyland.

Getting the Lightning Lane Multi Pass add-on isn’t as necessary here but it still adds some efficiency to your visit. If you get it, you’ll need to start using it in the morning. Coming in during the 11AM park hopper time might convince you it’s a waste. So, start early and hit it quickly if you’re going to dedicate your money to Lightning Lane.

If your desire is to make this a vacation, we would recommend a minimum of three days at these Disney parks.

FAQ for California Adventure:

What is the best way to book tickets?

Southern California residents ideally should wait for special deals that might happen once a year. These deals typically include three days at the parks and might even include Lightning Lane access, all for a discounted rate. When these deals occur, it might actually be better to not purchase from Disney directly but instead from authorized third parties. We have no financial relationship with third parties like Undercover Tourist, but they can offer a further discount on top. As an example of pricing, we recently got a three-day park-hopper ticket with Lightning Lane and a $10 Disney gift card for $284 each ($95/day).

What if you’re not a Southern California resident? These third parties are typically still the way to go when you purchase tickets. It also helps if you find a shopping portal deal at Undercover Tourist too, which helps earn you some money or points back.

Lastly, if you wish to purchase directly from Disney, consider loading up on Disney gift cards. You might get discounts you didn’t know you could use at Disney through your credit card merchant offers. An example includes a merchant offer for Best Buy, which sells Disney gift cards. Thus, a 10% offer for Best Buy is as good as a 10% offer for Disney by the transitive property.

What California Adventure rides are the best?

This is a highly subjective question that depends on who you have in your party and your interests. We’ll offer up more insights into this in a separate post, but we’d say the following are among our favorites at Disney’s California Adventure:
– Incredicoaster
– Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: BREAKOUT!
– Goofy’s Sky School
– Soarin’ Over California (not other destinations)
– Toy Story Midway Mania!

See the California Adventure website to view an interactive map showing all rides at the theme park.

Is there a preferred order to ride the rides?

There are generally three options for you depending on what you prefer when entering the park.

1. Go straight to Radiator Springs at entry. You’ll see a long line right from the start as many others have the same idea. After Radiator Springs, don’t forget to hit up the other rides in Cars Land.

2. Ignore Radiator Springs and go to the next-most-crowded ride in Guardians of the Galaxy. After Guardians, stop by WEB SLINGERS since it’s right next door.

3. Head to the Pixar Pier area to hit up the Incredicoaster, Pixar Pal-A-Round, and Toy Story Midway Mania! The Pixar Pal-A-Round in particular doesn’t have a Lightning Lane line skipping feature, so this is as good a chance as any to try it out.

There’s no single right answer on what to do, and it’s important to be flexible based on ride lengths.

How much is it to park at Disneyland?

In 2026, the parking fee $40 if you wish to visit Disneyland or California Adventure. It does come with in and out privileges. It requires tram service to the parks, which can get crowded at the end of the day after the fireworks celebration. You have been warned.

Discounts may apply if you have a Disney Magic Key annual pass.

How early should I arrive to California Adventure to make rope drop?

This will vary on the day you come here. During the summer or on Saturdays, we would say aim for 6:30AM if the park opens at 8AM. During weekdays outside the summer, you might make it work with aiming for 7AM.

If you’re staying the night in the area, you won’t need to worry about fighting with others for parking, so you can get 15-30 minutes of extra sleep.

Can I purchase alcohol at California Adventure?

Yes, there is plenty of alcohol at California Adventure. There are vendors dedicated to selling just alcohol and you can walk around with it. This is one thing that’s far less restrictive than at Disneyland next door.

Where is the best place to see the characters with few crowds?

Right at the entrance. We found that waits for meeting the characters wasn’t ever too excessive here. You’ll find them pop up from time to time around Buena Vista Street. If you’re tired of the long waits over in Disneyland, come over here and have an easier time interacting with the characters.

What are the better restaurants to dine at?

We’ll spend more time diving into the restaurants at California Adventure separately. Some of our favorite full-service dining locations include the Carthay Circle and the Wine Country Trattoria. If you want something quicker and more casual, the Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta cafeteria-style restaurant is a fan favorite. Or, check out San Fransokyo Square for a whole assortment of smaller options with their own flair.

Closing thoughts

Making the most out of Disney’s California Adventure will still require some planning on your part. Sorry, but that’s just how it is at Disney theme parks and this one is no different. You’ll want to map out what rides you want to go on, where you want to eat, and figure out where you’ll start your day. From there, it’s all about adapting to the situation as it unfolds: are the crowds more than you expected? Are the rides you want to experience closed? Are you too fatigued to go on?

We’ve been there and all we can say is we feel you. California Adventure still feels a bit lacking in 2026 compared to Disneyland next door, but it still has fun rides and excellent dining. We think the dining is almost as good as it gets for a theme park within the United States. If you have access via park hopper, consider starting your day here and then jumping to Disneyland later in the day. In our view, that’s how we might maximize our time here.
