Why You Need to Collect Etihad Guest Miles

Etihad Guest miles might not be the top of everyone’s minds in terms of great programs to harbor your miles, but it’s not bad if you have a specific use.

Updated December 10, 2025. Etihad updated their fees for canceling and changing flights, and now nothing is allowed within 72 hours.

For this post, I’m not going to get into the details of the elite status aspect of the program and instead focus on the redemption side of the program.

Three banks transfer to Etihad Guest miles

If you need to pad your Etihad mileage balance,

  • American Express Membership Rewards transfers points at a 1:1 ratio, instantly
  • Capital One transfers points at a 1:1 ratio, instantly
  • Citi ThankYou transfers points at a 1:1 ratio, instantly

There are occasional transfer bonuses to Etihad Guest miles, but they’re not terribly frequent. You might find one or two promos per bank program per year normally.

Award flights booked with Etihad miles can be booked 330 days in advance

As a planner, I love being able to book awards well far in advance. I feel like I can lock down my preferred dates of travel before the majority of other award seekers. And so the earlier the schedule is released, the better it is.

But perhaps what matters more is being able to book awards before those with a large balance of miles with U.S. programs are able to book. Those programs generally open schedules and award bookings 11 months in advance. So if you can find a program that allows awards weeks before the comparable U.S. airline (here, American or Alaska), you can generally book what you want.

Award flights booked with Etihad miles can only be booked 330 days in advance, roughly in line with US programs. However, Etihad premium cabins are restricted with most partner programs until 30 days in advance.

Award change and cancel fees are brutal, among the worst

Need to change or cancel an award flight? Get ready for some pain:

  • Canceling a flight
    • More than 72 hours from departure:
      • Free for Deluxe fares
      • 25% fee on Comfort fares
      • Not possible on Value fares (i.e., no refund)
    • Less than 72 hours from departure:
      • Not possible on any fare (i.e., no refund)
  • Changing a flight
    • More than 72 hours from departure:
      • Free for Deluxe fares
      • 200 AED fee on Comfort fares
      • 600 AED fee on Value fares
    • Less than 72 hours from departure:
      • Not possible on any fare

The percentage fees for cancelations on award tickets are based on miles, so if you booked a Comfort fare and canceled immediately, 25% of the miles used would not be returned to you. Ouch. If you feel like you’re making a speculative booking that needs to be canceled, should you opt for a Deluxe fare? The problem is that Deluxe fares are expensive, and you might be wasting miles to buy that fare just to avoid the potential penalty on Comfort fares.

Changing a flight is much preferred to canceling, as 200 AED is about $55 US, and that’s easier to stomach.

However, the most punitive part is no cancelations or changes are allowed within 72 hours. That’s easy to forget as other programs tend to cut off changes/cancellations starting at 24 hours. For those who like to improve their itinerary with last-minute award space, this change is especially punitive.

Award booked with Etihad Guest miles are distance-based

Etihad awards

If you want to take a ride on Etihad, you’ll pay a minimum number of miles as indicated in the table below. However, you could see pricing exceed these amounts. We’ve seen other programs do this to allow for extra award availability for its own members. That’s fine, as long as it’s possible to get enough seats at the cheapest rates.

Partner awards

Etihad is not part of an alliance, so it must craft its own partnerships. The airline partners with the following:

If you want to book an award on these partners, you’ll be looking at the following award chart. The amounts have changed a bit over time, but this is the latest shown on their site.

What are the sweet spots?

Premium economy partner flights

It can still be a bit challenging to find premium economy options on many routes. However, if you do find it, the rates are decently attractive. Etihad doesn’t have a premium economy cabin as of yet, but many of its partners do. With generally elevated service and a more comfortable seat, don’t spend your miles on regular economy when premium economy is available for just a bit more.

Flying first class on partners

It seems like the common thing to do is to charge astronomically more for first class over business class. That’s close to being the case for Etihad’s own flights (first is twice business). But for Etihad’s partners? Surprisingly more affordable than expected. While there are some partners that offer a first class cabin, many do restrict access to their own members. If and when you do find award space, you can take some solace in it not being terribly priced.

Better access to Etihad premium cabins

We’ll call it “access” for two reasons: (1) potential better availability beyond saver award space, and (2) being able to book it more than 30 days in advance. If you have the desire to fly in their First Apartments cabin or in business class, having access might be important. Thus, it might be worth it to pay a little more for that access than what you might pay through another program (like AA).

Infant awards are 10% of the miles price

Back when we flew internationally with an infant, we ended up sometimes paying a pretty penny to allow our child to sit in our lap. Without getting into the debate on the safety of the lap child, I can say it sometimes got expensive.

With most airlines, you would be forced to pay 10% of the cash price of the ticket. Say you found a flight for 75,000 miles in business class one-way. But if you want to bring your lap infant, you’d have to pay 10% of the cash fare, which could be thousands of dollars. A one-way flight is painfully priced high, and you might pay less if doing a roundtrip, but it’s still quite a dent. I’d say the rough average of what we paid for an infant was around $600 for the ticket.

Thankfully, infant awards booked with Etihad Guest miles are just 10% of the miles used for the adult fare. That’s awesome!

How to best search for availability?

The easy answer is to use Etihad’s website to search for award space. You don’t need to log in to your account to perform award searches. That’s good, but selecting an option to get a better look at the cost breakdown will require logging in. And if you don’t have enough miles in your account, you’ll be forced to see the cash price instead. Lastly, there is no calendar feature, so it’s a little challenging to effectively use their site to dig around for award flights.

The free point.me award tool will help you find award space since the program is an Amex transfer partner. Or, you can choose your favorite award search tool.

Do Etihad Guest miles expire?

Yes, Etihad Guest miles will expire after 18 months. There are just two caveats:

  • If you hold Platinum or Emerald Tier status, your miles will not expire as long as you hold the status.
  • Only crediting flights to your Etihad Guest account will extend their expiry.

That unfortunately means that transferring more points in to your account from a bank program won’t help with the expiration date. This isn’t a great program to house your bank points, so only transfer as needed.
