The Citi Strata Elite Blacklane Credit is Easy to Use

We don’t love “coupon book” benefits but do like it when credit cards add useful and simple credits like the Citi Strata Elite Blacklane credit.

What is Blacklane?

You can think of Blacklane as another way to request rides to your destination. Similar to other car-hiring apps, drivers aren’t directly employed by the company and instead are contracted based on distance, vehicle class, and drive time. What sets Blacklane apart is convenience:

  • All vehicles are luxury cars.
  • Rides come with complimentary water and free use of child seats.
  • For airport pickups scheduled in advance, Blacklane will track your flight and the driver will wait for free up to an hour in the event of delays.
  • They have a specialization in city-to-city travel, which they’re arguing is easier than a flight or a train.

That makes it on par a bit more of a luxury experience than Uber or Lyft would provide. As you might expect, rates for the service are higher than Uber or Lyft, but that’s where the Citi Strata Elite can help.

The Citi Strata Elite has many benefits

Introduced in 2025, the Citi Strata Elite (not sponsored) is a credit card that has many unique features going for it:

  • $300 Annual Hotel Benefit per calendar year when booked via the Citi Travel portal and staying at least two nights.
  • $200 Annual Splurge Credit, to be used each calendar year at 1stDibs, American Airlines, Best Buy, Future Personal Training, and Live Nation / Ticketmaster.
  • $200 Blacklane credit, broken up for $100 from January to June and $100 from July to December.
  • Priority Pass Select membership (which doesn’t move the needle much for us given how many cards offer it).
  • Four AA Admirals Club lounge passes
  • A $120 Global Entry / TSA PreCheck credit

Out of any of the collection of statement credits, we find the Citi Strata Elite’s benefits the easiest to use. The hotel stay doesn’t have many restrictions to use it. The Splurge Credit can be used on anything Best Buy sells, including third-party gift cards. And the Blacklane credit is a bit simpler than I thought it would be.

The Citi Strata Elite Blacklane credit is easy to use

We have the Citi Strata Elite and found ourselves in a need to use the credit. We were landing at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) and needed to get to our hotel. Given we had two large bags and a couple of kids (and the first snow of the season), we didn’t want to face the complication of public transportation or worry about finding a ride through Uber. That’s when I realized I had the Blacklane credit with the Citi Strata Elite.

Ordering the ride was a simple exercise on their website, and I requested a booster seat. In the 24 hours prior to arriving, I received many notices from Blacklane alerting me to who our driver will be. The communication was good, and we felt well taken care of throughout the journey.

We arrived in Amsterdam to find our driver waiting for us with a sign that had our name on it. In reality, we could have requested any name to appear on it, but putting a celebrity’s name would have been too eye-catching. Despite our flight landing a good 30 minutes late, things went very smoothly.

Our chauffeur (not the same one as shown in the app image above) parked in the “VIP” parking structure, so it required a short five minute walk through the terminal. He insisted on taking our bags for us and led the way.

We boarded the Mercedes Benz van and found the booster seat already in the car. Also included are some bottles of water. It was a simple ride, and an incredibly convenient journey.

In the end, after the $100 statement credit, it wasn’t much different than what we would have been charged with Uber. But the convenience, the personal touch of meeting us just past customs, and the luxurious ride are much better than we would have received with Uber. We’re happy to have the credit, and look forward to using it again.

To be fair, we’re not yet sure how often we will use Blacklane without the credit. We’ll have to reevaluate that over time.

Important notes about the Citi Strata Elite Blacklane credit

We wanted to call out a few nuances for you as you’re trying to maximize the benefits.

The credit appears when your statement closes

We booked our ride on November 15 and took our ride on November 23, but the statement credit didn’t appear on our account until the end of the statement. In our case, that date was November 27. If you’re worrying about the credit not applying, you should wait until your statement closes before inquiring. And if your ride/reservation is too close to the end of the statement, it’s possible you might need to wait another cycle to get it.

The charge is dated to within a day of when the reservation was made

The other interesting thing to note is that the card was charged as of the date of the reservation. Since we booked our journey in the same statement cycle as when we took it, we can’t confirm if the credit can get triggered for far-off travel.

Where this matters is if you don’t have travel planned for the current semi-annual period, but you have a need for it in the next period. Using the credit now (for July – December) for travel beyond December means you won’t need to waste the credit if the activity triggers. We’ll try to look into this ourselves in the future, but in the meantime we’d appreciate if there are any data points from readers if this works.

Charges made in foreign currencies is eligible for the statement credit

One thing that can get annoying, especially for US-issued credit cards with statement credits, is that earning the statement credits might only be possible when there is travel within the US. That’s not the case here. As long as you book a Blacklane ride, it doesn’t matter where the ride occurs or what currency is charged. The charge will be converted to US dollars, and you will receive the credit.

We are thrilled because this makes the credit simple to use.

You can add more wait time for airport pickups to further hedge against delays

When you plug in you’re getting picked up from an airport, you can specify how much of a delay you need after the flight is scheduled to land. You can select times from needing a pickup right at landing up to an hour after landing. The simple way to look at this is if you’re expecting baggage pickup, immigration, or customs to take a while. Or, you might have other business you need to take care of right at landing.

However, the other possibility revolves around how long of a free wait you’re given. In the event of flight delays, your driver will wait up to an hour at the airport for you for free. If you anticipate your flight landing late (maybe you’re on a flight that always gets delayed), it might be worth it to ask for a pickup closer to an hour after landing. This potentially gives you more time to meet up with your driver before you’re charged a fee for waiting.

It’s not something we would consider doing all the time, but it might cross our minds depending on the route we’re flying.

No special account setup is necessary for earning the credit

You might wonder if you need to set up a special account with Blacklane or otherwise use a special code at booking. We’re happy to announce none of that is necessary. I only made an account after realizing that using Blacklane’s app might be helpful to track the driver upon landing. As long as your card sees the Blacklane charge, you’ll get the reimbursement.

While the app is helpful, drivers might still text you

I like the convenience of handling things all within the app. If there’s one area where we’d wish for improvement with the Blacklane experience, it’s having all communications done through their app. If you’re landing in a foreign country and staying on airplane mode–something we do when we use our personal Wi-Fi device–you’re going to miss any text messages from the driver. When we landed in Amsterdam, I didn’t get the text messages until after I went off airplane mode.

The app still kept us mostly up to date, but it would be nice if Blacklane handled all driver-passenger communications through the app.

Have you tried the Citi Strata Elite Blacklane credit yet?
