Hyatt Points Transfers Now Online, Finally Catches Up To Competitors

It’s nice when programs make it easy and free to transfer points among family and friends and now Hyatt can claim they allow it online.

World of Hyatt point transfers now available online

For years, World of Hyatt used an archaic system to transfer points from one member to another. You needed to fill out a paper form and have both the giver and receiver handwrite a signature. Hyatt would consistently refuse electronic signatures in the hopes of minimizing fraud. But that’s awfully inconvenient for folks wanting to transfer points, especially if they don’t live near each other.

That has now changed. As of October 15, 2026, Hyatt now has an online process to transfer points to any other member for free. A few important details about the transfer:

  • Both the giver and the recipient must be in good standing with World of Hyatt with accounts at least 60 days old.
  • A minimum of 1,000 points can be transferred, in increments of 500 points.
  • A cap of 525,000 Hyatt points applies per transaction and per calendar year. A member may both transfer and receive up to 525,000 points.
  • Each member is limited to one transfer per calendar month, and six per calendar year.
  • The sender must know the recipient’s first name, last name, email address, and World of Hyatt membership number.
  • Technically, points may take a day to transfer though expect it to clear as fast as instantly. Some transactions may take up to 10 business days.

Under the prior method, there was no limit on how many points you could transfer per year but now there is a hard limit of 525,000 Hyatt points.

The process is pretty straightforward and instant

Naturally, since I manage the accounts of several family members, I thought I would take the opportunity to test out the process. I’m happy to report it’s quite simple.

First, head to the Hyatt points transfer site and you’ll see the area where you can “gift your points” to someone else. This is the free process to send your Hyatt points to another Hyatt member.

From there, log into your account. After successfully logging in, you’ll see a screen that asks how many points you’d like to transfer. A minimum of 1,000 points applies and you can increase it in 500 point increments. If you have an odd number of points, you’ll be left with a small amount at the end of the transaction. For example, if you have 12,639 points, the most you can transfer is 12,500 and your account will have 139 points leftover.

From there, you’ll need to enter the details of who you want to send your points to. If you’d like you can also send a personalized message to your recipient. At the end of the transaction, the recipient will receive an email, including any message you choose to pass along.

After that, just confirm you agree with the terms and you should see the transaction was successful. In my experience, the points transfer was instant, though I did only send 12,000 points. I imagine it can take longer if you’re sending a higher volume of points.

If for some reason you have an issue with transferring points, you’ll likely see the following screen. I tried sending a second set of points from a different account to the same recipient and this is the error it returned. There is a transfer limit of once per calendar month, so two people can’t both send you Hyatt points in the same month.

Hyatt is just catching up to competitors at this point

As much praise as we’re giving Hyatt for making online transfers a thing, it’s important to remember one thing. The year is 2026. More companies should be investing in this newfangled internet craze and it’s surprising it has taken this long to get here.

The World of Hyatt program is a bit slow to the party, to say the least.

  • Choice Privileges literally just beat Hyatt to the punch, putting in a free online points transfer process since October 1, 2026. Points transfers are capped at 200,000 points sent to others, and each member can receive up to 100,000 points per calendar year.
  • Marriott also has a free online point transfer process, in place since 2023. Members can send a maximum of 100,000 points and receive 500,000 per year.
  • Hilton has been using free online points pooling between members since 2017. Members here can transfer 500,000 Hilton points out of their own account and receive up to 2 million per year. You know, the 2 million point cap for Hilton just makes us think that Hilton points simply aren’t worth that much these days…

Of the other major hotel competitors, IHG still charges for points transfers. But it’s IHG, so I can’t say much there.

Thus, while it’s great that Hyatt is making points transfers easier, it should be expected at this point.

This was necessary because Chase devalued points transfers

Earlier in 2026, Chase devalued point transfers over to Hyatt. Bilt is doing the same in 2027, but it’s more impactful for Chase. Why? Because Chase allows its cardholders to transfer points for free over to an authorized user’s account.

Have a lot of Ultimate Rewards points and want to send them over to an authorized user’s Hyatt account? You can do that. But if you don’t have the Chase Sapphire Reserve and instead just the Chase Sapphire Preferred, those transfers are no longer 1:1.

That’s a lot of engagement lost for Hyatt. So it seems natural for Hyatt to restore 1:1 transfers within its own program. Sure, it’s not quite the same–the Chase transfer rate is not great unless you have a card with a high annual fee–but if you’ve been sitting on a large stash of points, it’s now easier to send them over to a friend.

And it also helps if you’re looking to move on from Hyatt. You and a bunch of buddies can pool points together for one last hurrah easier now.

Are you going to transfer Hyatt points to others now?
