How to Earn United Airlines Lifetime Premier Status

It might take you a lifetime of devoted flying on a single airline to reach even the first level of Lifetime Premier status with United.

What is ‘lifetime’ status?

Lifetime status is used as a reward for your commitment to the airline. You’ll never fall below the corresponding elite status threshold, even if you take a year off. Once you hit a million miles or more, you could earn this lifetime elite status.

You might think of ‘lifetime’ status as representing status for the rest of your life. That could be true, depending on how long you live, but that might not be true for all. You might also think of it as keeping the status for the lifetime of the loyalty program, which is potentially more correct, but that’s not also always true. Think of it as an indefinite ending to the status level. That’s it. Airlines can and do change what you get at each lifetime status threshold. And sometimes what they do to the normal elite status program can impact you as a lifetime elite.

Thus, lifetime status isn’t something you should actively strive for unless you’re in spitting distance of earning it. If you think saving up points to use in the future is a gamble, how about basing your flying for a decade or more on something that might not be there in the future?

There’s a reason why these companies are moving away from the ‘lifetime’ naming of the status to calling it ‘Million Miler’. They want to remove the notion that you should expect something ‘for life’. (Though United still uses the labeling… for now.)

How do you earn United Lifetime Premier status?

The normal elite qualification process for the United MileagePlus program is Premier Qualifying Points (PQP). You can earn PQP by flying United, their airline partners, and spend on credit cards. There are also reduced qualifications for existing elites by way of a bonus PQP deposit varying by level.

When it comes to Lifetime Premier status, you can ignore completely ignore PQP. United Lifetime Premier status is based on butt-in-seat miles.

Do award flights help earn United Lifetime Premier status?

No, only flights booked with cash and cash equivalents earn credit towards lifetime status on United. If you book a flight with United miles, you’ll earn PQP but you will not increment your lifetime miles counter.

What elite status levels are possible with United Lifetime Premier status?

The table below helps outline the different status levels you can earn with United Airlines. Benefits start at 1 million lifetime miles with United.

ThresholdUA Elite Status LevelAdditional Benefits
1 million miles flownLifetime Premier GoldCompanion in household also earns Gold
2 million miles flownLifetime Premier PlatinumCompanion in household earns at least Platinum
3 million miles flownLifetime Premier 1KCompanion in household earns at least 1K
4 million miles flownLifetime Global ServicesCompanion in household also earns Global Services

At each threshold, you may nominate a companion living in your household (such as a spouse, roommate, or child) to share the same status you have. There is a little bit of distinction to reference:

  • In 2026 and prior, the shared status represents the MileagePlus member’s lifetime status or current status level, whichever is greater.
  • Starting in 2027, this only applies starting at 2 million miles. At 1 million miles, only Gold status is shared with a companion even if the member with lifetime status has a higher current status.

As an example, say a member has 1 million lifetime miles and also is a Premier 1K member. In 2026, the companion would receive 1K status (rather than Gold), but starting in 2027, the companion would end up with Gold status. However, if a member has 2 million miles and is also a Premier 1K member, the companion would get 1K status regardless of year.

Sharing status is perfect for those playing in 2-player mode. Not only does Player 2 get status, but that could also mean a family of 4 can get into Star Alliance lounges.

You may enroll or change a companion on United’s website here.

How does United lifetime status compare to the competition?

United’s primary competitors are American, Delta, and Southwest.

  • American offers a weaker lifetime status program than what United offers. While United starts off at mid-tier and enables the possibility of invite-only Global Services status, American starts at entry-level status and only goes up to Executive Platinum (not Concierge Key). American’s weaker program is likely a reflection of how all miles used to be considered lifetime miles until 2012.
  • Delta offers equivalent status levels as what United offers, but United members can get invite-only status starting at 4 million miles rather than 5 million with Delta.

Additionally, United offers comparable status to a companion living at the same address while Delta only gives gifts. At the same time, Delta counts flights booked with SkyMiles to the lifetime counter while United does not.
  • Southwest does not have a lifetime elite status program.

Are there any shortcuts to earning United MileagePlus Lifetime Premier status?

If only!

While there were once shortcuts to earning American or Delta lifetime status (no longer applicable in each program), there wasn’t a shortcut with United. If you want it, you need to work a long time to earn it.
