Capital One Lounge Access Changes for Venture X

Recently, Capital One lounge access has changed for Venture X cardholders, causing some to rethink their lounge access strategy.

Changes to Capital One lounge access

Prior to February 1, 2026, the Capital One Venture X card has the following lounge access:

  • Complimentary access to Capital One lounges for primary and additional cardholders, along with 2 complimentary guests per visit
  • Enrollment into Priority Pass for primary and additional cardholders, along with unlimited guest access

However, this is changing February 1, 2026 for both the personal and business versions of the card:

  • Complimentary access to Capital One lounges is available for primary cardholders
  • Additional cardholders (authorized users) will need to pay $125 annually to have access to lounges
    • Additional cardholders who do not want lounge access will continue to pay no fee
    • Only 4 additional cardholders are allowed per account
  • Guests of cardmembers with access will be charged a fixed rate, unless $75,000 is spent on the card
    • $45/guest per visit for adults
    • $25/guest per visit for children 17 and under
    • Free for children under age 2
  • Accounts that spend at least $75,000 in spend in a calendar year can complimentary access for two guests to Capital One lounges.
    • Complimentary access is valid the rest of the calendar year it is earned, plus the following year, ending January 31 of the next calendar year.
  • Enrollment into Priority Pass for primary and additional cardholders, but no guest access.
    • Each guest will cost the cardmember $35/visit.

My take on these changes

Quite frankly, I’m unsurprised by the changes. Are they disappointing? Perhaps in the sense that members are getting less and offered nothing positive as a consolation. I’m of the belief that negative news should be dampened with something positive as an offset, even if it doesn’t fully compensate.

The negative changes are quite numerous:

  • Authorized users no longer get complimentary access
  • Guests are no longer complimentary unless you spend a whopping $75,000 on the card
  • Priority pass no longer offers any guests, even if you do spend $75,000 on the card

The positive isn’t quite as obvious, but it’s supposed to improve wait times getting into their lounges. The problem is when everyone has access, no one has access. I mean, just look at a recent reddit post. A 2 hour, 14 minute wait is absurd.

At the very least, Capital One allows you to join the line virtually. You don’t have to physically stand in a line to get in like what you tend to see with Amex Centurion Lounges. I frequently see lengthy waits to get into the ATL version of that lounge.

But will these be improvement?

But will the Capital One Venture X lounge access situation improve with these changes? I’m hesitant to say they will significantly improve off this one change. Why? Because Amex Centurion Lounges are still overcrowded and they have had a similar restriction in place for a while. If there’s not significant improvement at those lounges, why would we expect anything different here?

I can see marginal improvement, but not one that completely eliminates a two hour wait. This is more an attempt to earn more revenue for Capital One’s bottom line. It could mean Capital One then has the funding to build lounges in more airports, or to keep investing in the experience within these lounges. So from that perspective, it seems necessary.

This stacks on top of recent Venture access changes

If you recall, just last year Capital One changed access for Venture cardholders. Those members used to receive two complimentary lounge visits per year. However, those members no longer receive complimentary access. Access is only given for $45/visit for themselves and each guest 18 and older.

That regular Venture access policy is how I ended up visiting the Capital One Lounge at DFW, which I very much enjoyed. Sadly, I don’t transit airports all that often that have a Capital One Lounge (DEN, DFW, IAD, LAS).

Slowly, Capital One is putting the clamps on access. That makes sense because they likely made it easy to access to start to build demand and familiarity. And once they had the investment, they brought access rules closer in line with the competition.

Is there a strategy to work around Capital One lounge changes?

First, I don’t think this is worth tearing up your Venture X credit card, so put down those scissors.

The only recommendation I can give is if you have a guest who is also eligible to apply for their own Capital One credit card (my refer-a-friend link).

That individual is probably best off paying the annual fee ($395) in exchange for:

  • $300 annual travel credit (I use this on flights)
  • 10,000 in Capital One points that can be transferred to partner programs or redeemed for $100 in cash

Sure, a $395 annual fee is hefty. But if you can use the other benefits, it’s far better than paying $125 for that additional cardmember to get access and have no offsetting benefit.

The one downside is that Capital One can be picky on who they allow to have their card. I know from experience that it took a couple of years before Capital One allowed me to pick up their Venture X. So this strategy purely relies on you being able to apply.

What about kids?

For children, there’s not a good way around this. Authorized users for Capital One cards must be at least 18 years old, so you cannot just make them an additional cardholder if they join you often. Your only options would then to pay the $25/visit fee or to spend $75,000 on the card to unlock free visits.

Would a family of four come out ahead if the adults had access but the kids needed to pay a total of $50 to enter? I think it ultimately depends on the opportunity cost: what you would otherwise do. If it’s just to eat, perhaps not. But if the adults want to also drink? Maybe paying $50 for the family makes sense. Of course, it also depends on how long you’re in the lounge if it takes a while to get in.

But like I said, no perfect solution exists for children. It all depends on your own situation.

What are you going to do about your Venture X with these changes?
