Following the lead of their competitors, we will finally see American Airlines Free Wi-Fi available to AAdvantage members in 2026.

American Airlines free Wi-Fi is coming in 2026
Per an official announcement (and sent via email to members), American Airlines will be offering complimentary Wi-Fi on their flights starting 2026.
Hello, Christopher
American Airlines is excited to offer a new benefit we know you’ve been waiting for, which is why I’m honored to be the one to share it with you directly.
Starting in January 2026, AAdvantage® members can enjoy complimentary high‑speed Wi‑Fi1 on more planes than any other U.S. airline, sponsored by AT&T.
At American, we’re working to elevate the customer experience and we’re proud to connect you to the people and places that matter most. Soon, you can stay connected – for free – every step of the way. Whether you’re catching up on work emails or texting friends and family, you will receive best‑in‑class Wi‑Fi service at no cost, exclusively for our most loyal customers.
On behalf of everyone at American, thank you for being an AAdvantage® member, and we look forward to bringing you this benefit in 2026.
First of all, bravo for finally moving in this direction. Making Wi-Fi free for all is undoubtedly a good thing as it doesn’t cost AA anything to offer it incrementally to customers (just at the expense of bandwidth). It should be celebrated.
But please note that the announcement didn’t specifically say which routes would get free Wi-Fi, only a cryptic “powered by ViaSat and Intelsat” footnote. The planes covered by ViaSat and Intelsat are just the planes serving domestic routes. This doesn’t cover international routings (which use Panasonic). It will also require you to sign up for their program to make the Wi-Fi free.
Will AA follow through with free Wi-Fi?
It should be noted, of course, that the price tag for Wi-Fi on American Airlines was already quite high (upwards of $20 depending on your route). It’s so high, in fact, that it costs more to connect on AA than it does on Alaska ($8), Southwest ($8), and even Spirit ($7.99) combined.

Surely, this is a source of revenue for American Airlines. So where is it going to be made up? The natural assumption would be for them to push up base fares to compensate.
Let’s do some quick and dirty math. Assume AA was netting $20 in revenue on each Wi-Fi purchase (some people would get monthly plans bringing down the price). Also assume the average plane seats 150 and that 10% of the passengers purchase Wi-Fi. That suggests only a $2 increase to base fares is necessary (for each 10% of utilization). If half the plane uses Wi-Fi (which seems high), you’re looking at a $10 increase to base fares.
In reality, the math is fuzzier than this, since federal excise tax impacts base fares differently than it does add-ons like Wi-Fi. But you’d expect AA to make up for the revenue somewhere, unless they are noticing people are booking away from them now that Delta, JetBlue, and United all offer free Wi-Fi. I’d also assume they’re forecasting some softness in travel in the near future and want to protect themselves from it. Boosting benefits (especially those that come at a low cost) is one way to do that.
So will it happen?
The real question I have is whether AA will follow through and actually do it. Remember when AA announced it would offer free messaging but then never did it after getting the positive publicity? We’ll see if AA actually does it or if they find an excuse to get out of it.
American Airlines wants to be a premium airline–one that will encourage customers to spend more money with them for the experience. They’re starting to make investments in the lounge experience. They also referenced a new business class seat during their 2024 earnings call. If they are true to their word about turning American Airlines into a premium airline, they absolutely need to offer free Wi-Fi.
When fellow full-service airlines Delta and United already offer free Wi-Fi, it looks out of place for AA not to also offer. And so I would be willing to bet that AA does indeed follow through this time. I’d be surprised if American Airlines free Wi-Fi doesn’t happen this time.

Are you looking forward to free Wi-Fi on American Airlines?
