For our first night in Zurich, Chris made reservations at Le Dezaley, a restaurant famous for the cheese fondue. The server recommended a local pinot gris, a we order a couple glasses of the white wine to accompany our dinner. Chris ordered the set menu consisting of an air dried ham board, cheese fondue, and fruit salad. I ordered an escargot starter and cheese fondue a la carte. The cheese fondue was rich and the texture was smooth. Chris couldn’t help but finish almost the entire pot.
We could not be in Switzerland and not visit Sprungli (makers of Lindt chocolates) store and café. Sprungli café and store is located at the corner of Bahnhofstrasse and Paradeplatz. Sprungli also makes signature macarons known as Luxemburgerli. After drooling over the window displays at the Sprungli store, Chris and I enjoyed a couple of hot chocolate drinks and shared an order of soup and variety of macarons at the adjoining café.
On our only full day in Zurich, Chris and I participated in a City Highlights with Felsenegg Cable Car Ride tour with Best of Switzerland Tours. We toured Zurich in an air conditioned coach bus and visited a few locations by foot, including Fraumunster Church (Women’s Minster) and Felsenegg Cable Car. Fraumunster Church had beautiful windows painted by Marc Chagall (no photography allowed).
For our last night in Zurich, Chris and I asked the hotel to make reservations for us at Johnanniter. Chris ordered a liter of Hurlimann Lager while I had a bottle of Arkina mineral water. We wanted to try traditional Swiss dishes at this restaurant. Chris ordered the Walliser Raclette (melted Swiss cheese with potatoes, picked cucumbers, and picked onions) and I had the Geschnetzeltes Kalbfleisch (sliced veal Zurich style with mushroom cream sauce and roseti). Both dishes were delicious and the final bill ended up much cheaper than what would have been the cost at our original reservation at Kronehalle.
I cannot believe that Chris finished a liter of lager and was able to lead us safely back to the hotel at the end of dinner!
